CHINESE ORCHESTRA, YAMAHA FLUTE ETC
Esplanade Presents Beautiful Sunday is a series of free concerts by local musicians and today's programme 'Folk Melodies Of The Orient' featured the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra. This accomplished ensemble has won numerous international awards and performed in various foreign countries. I had marked this event in my diary months before. Although I'm not a big fan of Chinese orchestral music, a FREE concert by musicians of international standing is certainly an event not to be missed!

(Blah.. blah.. blah..)

After the emcee gave a brief introduction, the conductor walked in and took centrestage to a welcoming applause from the audience. The concert began with a piece depicting the countryside scenes of China. It started off with a thundering roar of cymbals, timpani, and Chinese drums. I was surprised there were cellos and a double bass in the orchestra, so I guess you can't really call this a pure Chinese orchestra. However these Western instruments did blend in very nicely with the 20 or so Chinese violins. I was attracted to the double bassist who did a lot more bowing than plucking (all this while I was under the impression the double bass is supposed to be played pizzicato only) His bow was huge and the way he held it, he looked like he was sawing wood LOL.
And the programme got more interesting. The second piece was a Chinese flute concerto. That was the first time I'd seen a 3-tubed flute. The soloist made use of the lovely sweet tones to good effect. I noticed he kept jumping to another blowhole to move an octave higher. A flute and piccolo put together! This work is unmistakenly Chinese but at times it reminded me of Beethoven's Pastoral :-)
The third piece was a Chinese banjo concerto. A very lovely piece with lots of solo passages that will remind you of scenes from The Last Emperor. I was amazed by the deft fingers of the soloist. Certainly not easy to play a virtuosic piece such as this. Around this time, the person next to me began snoring, probably lulled to sleep by the gentle tremolos of the banjo. Oh God, I chose the wrong seat - bummer !
Then fourth piece came to the rescue. This loud Chinese trumpet concerto woke him up, much to my delight (^0^) The soloist was really young, couldn't be older than 13. Despite his tender age, he plays the trumpet really well. The weeping long notes in the first few bars brought Zhang Yimou films to mind. The kind that tugs at the heartstrings with stories of hardship in the mountain villages of inner China.
Yet another concerto came next as the fifth piece. I particularly liked this Chinese violin concerto / tone poem. The rhythm was rather unusual - it kept switching between 4/4 time to 5/4 time (and to 7/4 time?) until the music grew steadily to a climax. One could see the conductor's strong fist grip in the air as the melody got more and more intense. Not unlike the Western violin, the soloist made use of lots of vibrato throughout the piece, and at some point he was sliding his finger to perform a kind of glissando but only within a single tone. Maybe this is a special technique only found in Chinese music repertoire?
The last piece was an orchestral work that was once used in a national music competition in Singapore, The Vibrant River. A rather fast work with interesting melodic lines that ended with a loud bang that was sure to jolt the sleepy-eyed amongst the audience *ahem*
The crowd cheered and gave a rousing applause, and someone behind me even cheered with his whistle. Clearly the audience wanted more. Bravo, bravo! The conductor obliged by coming back to the stage with his Chinese violin to play a short but engaging concerto encore. What a marvellous way to end the hour!
Yeah, we all have at one time or another, seen Chinese orchestras perform at shopping malls, or in the school hall back when we were students, but listening to these polished musicians in a state-of-the-art acoustic concert hall from a plush seat and under conducive ligting, is a totally different aural experience altogether. Contrary to common belief, Chinese orchestras are anything but boring. I'm so glad I went to watch them play.

Though i wasn't performing. I thought it was still quite encouraging to us. The way this person describe makes me feel happy too. hahaha!! :)

(So sad that there's no updates right?! Whose fault? haha.)

刚过去的《美丽的星期天》大家都表现得很好! 很为你们骄傲! 没去看的人，是你们的损失。今年的最后一场音乐会过了，也就代表着今年的新加坡青年华乐团也到此结束。大家不免也有些伤感吧？再者，今年也特别在我们有一位新的指挥老师来带我们这一年。这场音乐会的结束也代表着这位老师将向我们道别，回到中国去继续他的工作。

这一年的相处下来，没有人会不认同姚老师是一个个性多么温和的老师。虽然时间不长，很高兴能和老师有这些接触。相信多数的同学会同意我说的？相信不少人会舍不得这位和蔼可亲的老师？而他，不久后就要离开新加坡了。详细的资料，我也不是很清楚。当他说没有很期待回国的时候，心里觉得很可惜，认为‘要是老师不必离开就好了。’不过，我明白天下始终还是没有不散的宴席。所以，音乐会真的到此结束了！

谢谢姚老师这一年的教导! :) 希望你回国后还是会常常想起我们大家! :)))

《嘎达梅林交响诗》的背景

产生流传于内蒙古哲里木盟一带。依据嘎达梅林起义的历史事件创作而成。嘎达梅林，蒙古名为那达木德，汉名孟青山，乳名“嘎达”。成年之后，在达尔罕旗王府任梅林职，掌管军事。所以人们又称他为嘎达梅林。他领导的这次起义爆发于1929年哲里木盟达尔罕旗（今科左中旗），这是一次反对军阀张作霖和蒙古王公屯垦开荒、掠夺人民的起义斗争。前后历时数年，扩展到四、五个旗县，是蒙古族现代史上著名的人民起义，影响很大。

　　嘎达梅林的民歌产生在起义以后不久，开始以抒情短歌流传，以后逐渐形成为一首概括嘎达梅林起义全过程的叙事长诗。

　　长诗成功地塑造了嘎达梅林这一英雄形象，刻画了他的叛逆性格。他开始劝说王爷停止出卖土地，遭到革职处分，最后向张作霖为民请命，又被投入监狱，判处死刑。残酷的斗争现实使他幻想破灭，被救出后毅然举行了起义。转战数年,最后在强大敌人的联合进攻下,西拉木伦河一战，部众全部战死。他弹尽粮绝，誓不投降，在泅渡至河中心时中弹牺牲，表现了起义者大无畏的英雄气概。长诗还侧重刻画了嘎达梅林的妻子牡丹的英雄形象，描绘了其他众多的人物，反映了较为广阔的社会生活面和起义斗争的复杂性。

More analysis on 嘎达梅林交响诗:

交响诗《嘎达梅林》是女作曲家辛沪光于1956年在中央音乐学习时的毕业作品。这是她的成名作，也是一部具有极高水准的作品。

此曲音乐索材取自于一首同名蒙古民歌，并运用秦鸣趋势的结构创作而成。内容是描写并歌颂了蒙族英雄响诗嘎达梅林率领的牧民其一，及其与当时残酷的封建王爷，军阁英雄战斗的悲壮事迹。作品以悠长而富有民族风格的主题展开，不但有大漠草原的描写，也有千军万马的激战，更有对英雄之一的悲歌与颂赞。

乐曲旋律抒情而优美，隐含着一种辛酸，哀伤，在这种感觉背后，则是草原人民对生活的无限的热爱和童景，并为之奋斗不息的战斗精神和勇于胜利的英雄气概。有人将其与《梁祝》相提并论，并不为过。

20世纪初，我国一位蒙族英雄嘎达，为了土地和自由，领导人们其一斗争长达五年之久，最后起义失败。这部作品以嘎达牺牲的历史故事为题材，采用奏鸣曲式结构，全曲有三个部分组成：呈示部，展开部和再现部 (exposition, development & recapitulation)。各部分的音乐主题均来源于蒙族民歌《嘎达梅林》。

引子 (Introduction)部分乐曲以嘎达梅林故事开始，在缓慢，宁静的引子后，优美，舒畅，民歌色彩的第一主题 (First Theme at Exposition)，展示在辽阔无际的草原上，孕育了民族英雄的出现，而充满动感节奏的第二主题 (2nd Theme)，则表现了嘎达梅林号召牧民们起义战斗的形象。

展开 (Development) 不是从马蹄声开始的。主体旋律经过丰富多变的发展 (The main theme is being varied)，使音乐情绪逐渐推向高潮，似乎在人们眼前呈现一副悲壮，激烈的战争场面。活泼的音调，多调性的织体，描写了四处集结起义的队伍，骑马背枪奔驰在广阔的草原上，曲调呈现出一种热情洋溢的情绪，充满了乐观的气息和草原人民卫生存而斗争的形象。

乐曲最后一沉痛的感情再现了第一主题 (The first theme is being recapitulated)，表达了人们对已牺牲的英雄之哀悼 (However, this time, it's the mourning for 嘎达, who's sacrificed his life)。随后，乐曲在速度和力度的变化中，把悲伤的悼歌变成了对英雄嘎达梅林的颂歌，乐曲在满怀激情的强烈号角中结束。

全曲层次清晰，音响具有立体感。

a BIG thank you, and a undesirable farewell.

3 years down the long road, I guess it's finally the end.

I believe some of you may already know, the year 2007 marks the end of my time in SYCO.
However hard I've tried to find alternative paths to avoid this, I guess, all my efforts were in vain.
The December holidays has proven to be a tough and rough time for me, with all the brain-wrecking and countless questions
running through my mind.
But I'm glad the period is over, and the decision has finally been made.

And since I'm giving my final goodbye, I thought it's only right for me to mention the people who've made my time in SYCO a memorable one.

I hope that you guys will be able to have as much fun without me, and I do hope that the group will soar to greater heights under a new instructor, and a new leader.

The first time I knew you, you were studying A-maths during practise. (funny how I remembered this. ><) I thank you for the wonderful times we shared, the very few heart to heart talks we used to have in the past 2 years, the confidence you've given me, and the words of wisdom you've instilled in my mind. I thank you too, for the countless times you've played along with my 'Gay' streaks. ;D I do hope we will never lose contact however busy we are with our own personal matters.

Sypnosis:
In its fourth year since the Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) comes under the SCO, this youth wing will again present an impressive scorecard in its annual concert.
The challenging orchestral works, Overture by Phoon Yew Tien, and Fantasia "Terra-cotta Warriors" by Peng Xiu Wen, will be taken on by SYCO's young music enthusiasts.
As a tradition, the SCO will also team up with its protégé SYCO in some large-scale orchestral offerings.
Music Director Tsung Yeh and Conductor Ku Pao-wen conducts.

Introduction to this young Orchestra

The Singapore Youth Chinese Orchestra (SYCO) was formed under the auspices of Ministry of Education Extra-Curricular Activities Centre in 1969. The orchestra was subsequently under the care of Young Musicians’ Society (YMS) in 1980 when YMS became self-supporting. SYCO, an established name in the Chinese orchestra genre, is a prolific performing group. For example, it had won numerous prizes in international music competitions in the 1970s. It was also invited to perform in various countries.

Under the initiative of, Mr Chew Keng Juea, Chairman of Singapore Chinese Orchestra (SCO), the SYCO was formed in June 2003 under the management of SCO.

Under the music direction of Maestro Tsung Yeh, the baton of conductor Dr Ku Pao-wen, ex-conductor Mr Quek Ling Kiong and the guidance from various musicians in the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the SYCO has matured into an outstanding performing group.

Over the past 4 years, not only has the SYCO been performing at its annual concert winning popular acclaim; many of its members have been selected to participate in overseas arts festivals and music camps. Apart from raising the awareness of SYCO in other parts of the world, it has also helped members hone their performing skills and gain immense performing experiences.

The orchestra recently put up its third annual concert on 10 June 2006 to a full house. SYCO also made its debut at the Esplanade in its September 2006 concert “Beautiful Sunday”. In July, the orchestra was also invited to perform at the Tainan International Chishi Art Festival. To add on to its list of achievements, five members were successfully chosen to attend the Hong Kong Youth Music Camp in 2005.

Looking ahead, SYCO will continue to provide a training platform for its members and help them to achieve higher musical standards, develop artistically in all aspects and strive towards excellence in their performance.

SCO hopes that through SYCO, we would provide talented young musicians a chance to work with some of the best music talents in SCO and experience high quality professional music education and training.

We hope to encourage, inspire and nurture each member in a challenging and supportive environment so that he/she can pursue the highest standard in music performing. We also hope to groom potential talents to be future music practitioners and at the same time, instill upon each member the importance of the pleasure of music enjoyment, whether as a performer or listener.
